UML Business Architecture

Business Architecture captures present and target business structures, concepts and processes as required for large projects and Enterprise Architecture development.

UML Business Architecture

UML Business Architecture uses UML notation to ensure consistency of information and effectiveness of the modelling process. However, UML should be adapted to Business Architecture use by implementing Business Architecture-specific template and profiles, and should be complemented by the relevant interactive modelling techniques and presentation methods.

Although using the same notation, UML Business Modelling is a separate discipline from, say, UML OO Design, end requires specialist skills and experience. However when used properly, UML notation and tools deliver significant improvement to productivity and provide more positive, reassuring and comfortable experience to business executives involved in developing of Business Architecture.

Enterprise Architecture is critical in ensuring continuous IT capability to support business operation and development. However, to be effective Enterprise Architecture should be developed to the specific business needs and objectives. Business Architecture provides the necessary input, delivering Business Objectives, Capabilities, Processes and Concepts at the level of precision and consistency required by Enterprise Architects.

Gateway to Business Requirements

Business Architecture provides a foundation to development of more detailed Business Requirements that are highly beneficial for internal software development and essential for external development. The presence of more coarse-grained Business Architecture models provides UML Business Analysts with structure and reference points that they need.

Business Architecture Traceability

Business Architecture links high-level Business Objectives with detailed functional and technical decision. It can refer to the concepts, goals and objectives specified at boardroom-level documents and presentations, then map them to detailed business concepts and processes that are usually the domain of Business Unit Managers, Subject Matter Experts and Business Process Analysts, then facilitate mapping of detailed capabilities, data entities and scenarios to detailed business model. As a result, all IT activities related to system implementation and development can be aligned with fundamental business objectives.
